A Look to the Future

With the breeding of Stonewall Sporthorses we are always looking for what will be the next cross. What stallion has the attributes that will best complement, and potentially improve, our current breeding stock? As we have for the past three generations, we again look to Europe. We agree with the majority of sporthorse breeders, Olympic riders and World Champion drivers that the best sporthorses in the world come from Germany and the Netherlands.

Our odyssey with European stallions to complement our Stonewall Sporthorse mares began with the German stallion Ambrosius af Asgard, imported to America where he is known as Atlantis. The next top cross came from the Netherlands with the stallion Gooitzen f’ant Wyldpaed, imported to the United States as Apollo. A number of Apollo daughters, with Atlantis as damsire, make up our current broodmare band. They have 2019 foals by the exceptional Dutch stallion Monte 378 Sport.

Where do we go with Montelena, and potentially other daughters of the great Monte? An easy decision presents itself with a cross already proven. We can see what to expect when we cross daughters of Monte to the mighty Michiel 442 Sport. The progeny of this cross are spectacular. We only hope to add that dose of hybrid vigor, the proven courage, soundness and stamina of the Stonewall Sporthorse, and, hopefully, a beautiful spotted coat.

Michiel 442 Sport is a Prix St. George champion stallion standing an imposing 16.3 hands. Owned by Stal Okkema in Friesland Holland, this superb performance horse is siring outstanding foals, perhaps the best of these from daughters of Monte 378 Sport.

A wonderful aspect of breeding horses is the optimism we share as we look to the future.
